2020 Tournament Rules

Tournaments General Rules

Fencer Conduct

All fencers are expected to display skill and control. This is a martial arts tournament and all fencers are required to conduct themselves with respect for the weapon, their opponents, and the tournament staff. Any fencer that is deemed to pose a danger to themselves or others (excessive force/illegal targeting, etc) will be warned first by the director or judge. Should dangerous force continue the fencer will be removed from the tournament. 

Remember, this is for fun and sport. Don’t come here to be an ass. CombatCon doesn’t give refunds. 

        Above all, compete with good sportsmanship – your opponent is a human being also and safety and fun are more important than winning a match or a point. 

Disciplinary Actions

CombatCon 2020 will have a means to track all fencer warnings and actions across all tournaments. The standard process for all fencer misconducts will be: Warning, Penalty with point modification(s) against, second penalty of point modification against, removal from a or all tournaments. This may deviate in cases of excessive force, extreme fencer misconduct or injuries. In those cases Tournament Organizers will determine the facts of the situation before ejections occur. 

Match Length

Each match will last for 90 seconds of regulation time, or once the maximum score has been reached. Once the time of 90 seconds has been reached, an announced “Last Exchange” will be called for fencers to bring the match to a conclusion. If the score ends in a tie, a final exchange will be called with the match point to the first clean hit. 

Eliminations

Fencer’s total net scores will be calculated based on Points For minus Points against and those scores will determine rank placements for Elimination matches. For Elimination bracket winning matches will progress onward in single eliminations. 

Double Hits & Afterblows

A double hit is defined as two fencers landing valid blows against each other in the same tempo. This is undesirable, as it shows that the fighters are not adequately concerned with their defence. Doubles will be penalized in accordance to the stage of the tournament in which they occur.

  • Pools: Should two fencers strike three double hits in the course of a pool match, the match will end and both fighters will be considered to have lost the match. Each double called will negate 1 point from both fencers. 
  • Eliminations: Each double called will negate 2 points from the score for both fencers. Should two fencers strike three double hits in the course of an elimination match, the winner of the match will be at a negative 3 in their next match. 
  • An afterblow is defined as one fencer striking another immediately following a failed defence which lead to them being struck. The afterblow deducts two points from the score of the attacking fighter, with the exception of the one point targets. An afterblow on one point targets will be minus one point. 
    • At no point should an afterblow be considered a ‘revenge blow’, defined as an attack being thrown more than two tempos after being struck. Competitors delivering revenge blows or any strike with unnecessary force will be warned, then penalized minus 3 points in that match. A third offense by any fencer in any tournament will cause that fencer to be removed from the tournament. 
    • Afterblows will only deduct to a total of zero points per exchange. This means an afterblow on a one point initial target will total to zero, rather than become negative.

Valid Strikes

Points will be awarded for cuts, thrusts and pommel strikes in accordance with the rules of the individual tournaments. Points will not be awarded for touches with the sword, but must be delivered with sufficient intent and not excessive force. 

  • Cuts: For a cut to be considered valid it must have martial intent and force. Strikes with the far tip or extreme strong of the sword, incidental contact and flailing “push/pull” type attacks are not valid cuts. SCA style ‘wrap strikes’ are not valid cuts. 
  • Thrusts: Thrusts must be delivered in a committed manner, rather than pokes which make superficial contact. Committed thrusts require footwork or good extension against a rushing opponent. A sword bend is not required, but if the sword is at full extension and makes minimal contact, then the thrust is not valid. 
  • Pommel Strikes: Pommel strikes are only valid against the face of the mask. To be awarded points for a pommel to the sides of top, a fencer must pantomime the action and show clear intent but not strike. If a competitor’s arms are able to interfere in the completion of the act, no points will be awarded.  

Ring Out

These rules are to simulate an adaptation of dueling. There are no points for forcing your opponent out of the ring. Repeated actions will be disciplined as follows: a warning, minus 2 points to the instigating opponent, minus 4 points to the instigating opponent, the instigating opponent may be removed from the singular tournament. 

Off Limits Targets & Techniques

The following are off limits for safety reasons:

  • Direct targeting of the back of the head and spine is not permitted. Should a fencer display the unsafe behavior of exposing the back of their head to the opponent they will be progressively warned, then penalized by minus 2 points, and removed from the singular tournament.
  • Punches and kicks are not permitted.
  • Sword like poleaxe style strikes are not permitted. Neither are sword throws. No mordschlags and no Marsdens!
  • Any strike thrown with a complete lack of control on the part of the attacker. Competitive martial arts fighting involves throwing forceful strikes with intent to make contact, however, each competitor is expected to maintain a respect for their opponent’s safety at all times. Any competitor performing uncontrolled strikes will be given a warning, then a penalty of minus 2 points, and any further infractions will be ejected from the tournament.

Grappling

Grappling is only allowed for the purpose of binding actions for pommel strikes. No takedowns or throws are permitted. If fencers do not succeed in a grappling action within 3 seconds a Hold will be called and fencers will reset. 

Disarms

Disarms will not be allowed for safety reasons at this time. Except for Longsword, see rules there. 

Self Calls and Refusing Points

Fencers are able (and encouraged) to interject with a “Self Call” by raising their hand and calling for the director’s attention when it is safe to do so (Between exchanges or when there is a natural break.) A Self Call is when you believe you have been struck by your opponent but the judges did not see it, or to correct the judges’ target only when it is at your detriment. Eg: If the judges are calling a torso strike on you, you may Self Call that it was a head strike instead as the head is worth more points than the torso. Or if the judges missed an afterblow on you, you may call that your opponent got the afterblow and you should receive the point penalty.  Another example would be the hit you landed on your opponent. But again, only when it is to your detriment. Eg: The judges are calling a head strike, but you struck them in the arm. You are allowed (and encouraged) to call that the strike was to the arm since it is worth less points.

If the judges have called a strike that you have landed on your opponent, but you do not believe that it was of sufficient quality (please read “Valid Strikes” above) then you may (and are encouraged to) refuse points for that strike as it was not of quality. For the expediency of all tournament participants we ask everyone to be considerate of time and keep their communications brief.

Fencers may ask for clarification or checking of the rules if needed, however please do so only as necessary and not to delay matches. 

Fencers may be asked by a Director to Judge for their clarification on a call, please keep answers brief and certain. If you aren’t sure just say so. 

Protective Gear Requirements

All of these tournaments are considered to simulate unarmored combat dueling, and in the interest of promoting a professional HEMA image and to encourage fighters to respect the weapon simulators, we ask that all fencers gear up adequately for their tournaments. More detail shall be provided under each rule set. 

No exposed skin is permitted for any tournaments.

All gear & weapons will be inspected by the tournament staff prior to competition. If any gear is deemed to be inappropriate, the participant will be required to remove it and replace it with a piece of appropriate equipment. All Longsword Tournaments

*It is recommended that you enter advanced longsword only if you have taken a gold or medalled multiple times in other large events. All participants can only enter either Open or Advanced. Not both. 

Point Scoring

Slices to a target must use the majority of the blade edge in friction, and should affect the structure of the opponent.

Pommel strikes are only valid against the face of the mask. To be awarded points for a pommel to the sides or top, a fencer must pantomime the action and show clear intent but not strike. If a competitor’s arms are able to interfere in the completion of the act, no points will be awarded. 

Afterblow

The afterblow deducts two points from the score of the attacking fighter, with the exception of the one point targets. An afterblow on one point targets will be zero points. If you are going for the easy targets, you better be good to not get hit after. 

One-Handed Blows

One-handed blows are allowed when the other hand is removed as part of a grappling technique executed against an opponent. All valid cuts or thrust delivered in this way will be scored 1 point. Flailing tips on fabric, light blade contact, and uncontrolled or unsafe attempts will not be scored. 

Disarms

Disarms are clean actions in which a fencer removes the sword from the other fencer. It must be done cleanly and under 5 tempos. Clear disarms are 2 Points.  Should the opposing fencer loose their longsword but remain in grapple with the instigating fencer, no points will be awarded and fencers will reset. 

Point Limits

The match will be concluded once a fighter has reached a total of 9 points or time runs out.

All of these tournaments are considered to simulate an un-armored duel, and in the interests of promoting a professional HEMA image and to encourage fighters to respect the weapon simulators, metal plate armor (breastplates, elbow guards, gloves, helms etc) or fantasy-styled armors are not permitted. All armor will be inspected by the tournament staff prior to competition.

  • Appropriate head protection: Masks with back of the head protection.
  • Trachea protection, that protects the throat from a direct thrust.
  • Heavy padded HEMA jackets (e.g. SPES), or Padded Gambeson are ok 
  • Lighter gambesons are allowed – email for approval
  • Hard elbow protection, that covers the 3 points of the elbow.
  • Hard leg protection that covers the 3 points of the knee and covers the shin
  • SPES / Sparring Gloves / AF style gauntlets
  • Heavier steel gloves, Koning, or like are acceptable
  • Groin protection is required for male fighters.
  • Breast protection is required for female fighters.
  • Forearm protection is not essential but highly recommended.

Rapier Tournament

Off Hand Device

You may use an offhand device with the rapier. Accepted offhand devices are daggers, or bucklers.

Daggers

Dagger attacks receive the same amount of points as any other strike would have.  Cut/thrust/ pommel same as rapier scoring. 

Buckler

The buckler may be presented to the mask similarly to a pommel strike. Pantomime actions are acceptable with clear intent and no interference. Only the front and side of mask are acceptable areas for scoring. A fencer must pantomime the action and show clear intent but not strike. If a competitor’s arms are able to interfere in the completion of the act, no points will be awarded.

No Offhand Device (Single Rapier)

If you are not using any off handed device, you may use your free hand to deflect/swat parry away thrusts.  However, if the attack is a cut or the point lands on your free hand, it is counted as an arm strike. Holding a blade that has stopped in action is permissible for one tempo only. It must then be released or be scored as a hand strike against you.

Weapons

  • All weapons must reasonably be able to be classified as the weapons they are based off historically.
  • All weapons must have a rubber tip.
  • All weapons must have been made for the specific purpose of being fenced with.  Retrofitting broken blades is not permitted.

Rapiers

The blade may not be longer than 43 in. from the guard to the tip.

Only rapier blades may be used. Epee, foil, and other blades meant for classical or Olympic fencing are prohibited. Modified epee blades marketed as a rapier are also prohibited.

Off handed devices 

Dagger:

Dagger blades may not be longer than 20 in. form the guard to the tip. 

All dagger blades must be specifically made for the intended purpose of being a dagger to fence with.  No broken or modified blades are allowed.

Buckler:

Only a true to size buckler will be allowed. Max diameter of 14 in.

Bucklers may not have any spikes protruding from them

Point Scoring

The Old Game as it was known in the British Isles comes to CombatCon with the bar room style variant. Sadly due to safety we can not allow for actual alcohol to be part of this tournament. Reminder that no drugs or alcohol should be consumed prior to competing in a tournament. 

Point Scoring


Blow
Head3

The head (mesh encased part of the mask) is the only scorable and thus, strikable target for this tournament. No thrusting allowed nor striking other parts of the body. 

Glass of Beer

There will be no beer actually used in this event. Instead we will place a sealed bottle of water behind the back foot of both fencers. Fencers will measure up and then their feet are not allowed to move until the match ends. Tipping over their bottle will award 1 point to their opponent. 

Should a fencer move their feet as determined by the judge, a warning will be issued, after a second offense a penalty of minus 2 points will be scored, a third offense will score minus 4 points against the offending fencer. Remain calm, stand still, strike the head!

Point Limits

The match will be concluded once a fighter has reached a total of 9 points or time runs out. 

Acceptable Equipment

All single sticks with basket hilts will be provided by CombatCon. 

Protective Gear

This was typically played inside beer houses and bars and at county fairs. Although only the head may be struck we will ask that fencers still leave no exposed skin, long sleeve hoodies or jackets, are encouraged. For any gear or tournament related questions email Tournaments@combatcon.com

All gear will be inspected by the tournament staff prior to competition.

  • Appropriate head protection: Masks with back of the head protection.
  • Trachea protection, that protects the throat from a direct hit.
  • Light Jackets (AP Light, rapier jackets), Heavy hoodies. Heavy padded HEMA jackets (ie SPES), Padded Gambeson, or Fencing Jacket.
  • Hard elbow protection, that covers the 3 points of the elbow
  • Sparring Gloves / AF gauntlets or reinforced lacrosse gloves with properly padded wrist protection for both hands. Light leather gloves may be allowed providing they are reinforced with adequate wrist protection.Note: your hand should fit into the basket, or you may opt no basket with a sufficient glove.
  • Groin protection is required for male fighters.
  • Breast protection is required for female fighters.
  • Shin and forearm protection are not essential but recommended.
  • No exposed skin will be permitted.

Sword & Buckler Tournament

Cutting Tournament

IMPORTANT: Participation in the cutting tournaments represents a potential risk to participants/staff/spectators, to include serious injury or death, as well as to equipment. Participants in the cutting tournaments are knowingly choosing to accept this risk of their own violation and understand that the event organizers and staff as well as the tournament organizers/staff are not responsible for any injury or damage to equipment that comes from the actions of the participant. Participants also accept and acknowledge that the steps taken by the tournament staff to prevent those injures are satisfactory and sufficient. Participants agree to hold CombatCon and the tournament staff blameless and free from any and all liability. Please read the safety waiver carefully and fully. A competitor will not be allowed to complete without a signed safety waiver.

*It is recommended that you enter advanced cutting only if you have taken a gold or medalled multiple times in other large events. All participants can only enter either Open or Advanced. Not both. 

Disqualifications: This document will serve as the ONLY warning for disqualifications based upon unsafe actions. If a competitor conducts themselves in an unsafe manner placing themselves, staff, fellow competitors or spectators in danger they will be disqualified from the cutting events without further warning. Safety goes beyond the written rules of the event and requires common sense and respect for the dangers inherent in cutting with a sharpened sword.

Examples (not all inclusive): Horseplay while holding a sharp sword (to include acting as cutting towards another person), losing control of the sword where another person is placed in danger (“throwing” the sword).

In each round of the cutting tournaments each cut (single cut or multiple cut task as explained in each round) is worth a total of 20 possible points (10 points from each judge). For each cut a competitor starts at the max point value with deductions applied for errors in form and the result of the cut (as detailed below). Each judge will be tasked with scoring a certain portion of the cut (person or mat) and take note of deductions observed. After each cut the judge will indicate in the competitor’s scoring packet the highest deduction observed for that cut. Only the highest deduction will be applied per cut (i.e. the mat judge observes 2 errors in a cut, a scallop which is -2 and a successful cut where the sword strikes the stand which is -5, only the -5 is applied to the cut score) per judge. Deductions are either -10, -5 or -2. A failed cut (single cut or multiple cut task) will not earn any points, the cut/task was failed and there are no points for partially completing the task, points are only awarded for successful cuts.

Safety: Competitors are required to observe the following safety guidelines at all times. Violations of these guidelines may result in a warning or immediate dismissal from the cutting tournaments at the sole discretion of the tournament staff:

1. Always follow the instructions of the tournament staff without hesitation or argument. 

2. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

3. Do not swing your sword if there are people near you, especially directly behind you. 

4. Ensure your hands and hilt are dry before cutting.

5. Competitors are not to handle the mats during the tournament. Staff will handle all set up, 

adjustment and removal of mat and/or mat pieces.

6. Do not cut before being advised by tournament staff indicates they are ready for the competitor to begin.

7. Always approach the target from the specified direction.

8. Always remember that a sharp sword is a deadly weapon that is capable of injuring, maiming or killing another person.

Judges: For this event there are 2 primary judges. The judges are responsible for observing the cut or form and assigning deductions to the score as appropriate.

Tournament Rounds:

Open Cutting Tournament Rounds:

Competitors are asked to look at the judges before each cut to ensure they are watching each cut being made (except the semaphore and double cut rounds).

This event will consist of an elimination round consisting of 3 feats and a final round consisting of 2 feats:

Elimination Feat 1: Semaphores (Longsword and Arming Sword)

The competitors will be required to successfully complete as many cuts as safely possible as directed via semaphores. This feat will be performed once with a longsword and then with an arming sword. The cuts will be all true edge either descending or ascending from the right or left as directed. The semaphore will indicate the direction from which the cut is to originate. The cut must be completed before the next cut is signaled via semaphore. If a mat comes off of the spike there will NOT be any re-spiking of mats during this round.

Elimination Feat 2: Unique Cuts (Longsword)

The competitors will be required to successfully complete as many unique cuts as possible. The four basic cuts (true edge right/left descending and ascending) and straight down vertical cuts are not allowed for this task. A diagram of possible cuts is attached to this packet for reference.

Elimination Feat 3: Thrust to Cut (Longsword)

The competitors will be required to complete a thrust through the middle third of the mat, then cleanly extract the sword in one motion and finally perform a cut on the mat. The competitor should not stop between these actions, but rather flow continuously from thrust to extraction to cut. The competitor will perform as many thrust/extraction/cut combinations as they can safely perform on the mat without hitting the spike or stand.

The top 4 scored competitors from the three elimination rounds will advance to the final round.

Final Round Feat 1: Double Mat Roll (6 Basic Cuts w/ Longsword)

The competitors will be required to successfully complete 2 descending, 2 ascending and 2 horizontal true edge cuts on a single target consisting of two mats rolled together. Penalties will be applied as described in the “Possible Scoring Deductions” table in the previous section.

Final Round Feat 2: Double Cut (Either Longsword or Arming Sword)

The competitors will be required to complete an ascending cut (true edge or false edge, competitor’s choice) followed immediately by a second cut that cuts the severed piece (not the piece spiked to the stand).

Advanced Cutting Tournament Rounds:

The advanced cutting tournament rounds and feats will not be announced before the tournament. Be prepared for a challenging tournament! In general, the scoring deductions will be the same as above, except for one or two feats that will have enhanced penalties, which will be described to the competitors at the time of the feats.
