The CombatCon Dueling Experience moves to New Orleans, a city with dueling embedded in it’s history.

This 3-day experience will combine instruction in the historical protocols of a duel, dueling codes and martial arts classes as well as a look into the city’s history of dueling. Participants will prepare to defend their honor (and themselves) in personal combat.  The Experience will culminate in mock duels, inspired by all the drama, danger, and romance of their historical counterparts.

The Dueling Experience is open to all skill levels of participants.

-A Fencing Mask & Jacket
-Gloves for both the Left and Right Hands
-Rapier and Sabre trainers (loaners may be available but contact us in advance)
*Chest and Groin Protection are also highly recommended*
Learn About Your Instructor: Maestro Jared Kirby

Jared Kirby has been involved in Historical/Classical Fencing and Combat for Screen & Stage for over 30 years. He teaches in New York City (and the metro area) and has worked on Broadway, Off-Broadway, Nationally, in London and Sydney.

Maestro Kirby released “The Gentleman’s Guide to Duelling” in February 2014. This is an modern British English version of Vincentio Saviolo’s Code Duello which is the foundation of the training for this Experience.

Jared currently teaches fencing at SUNY Purchase, and is a Master of Arms (Maestro d’Armi) through the Martinez Academy of Arms. He teaches a variety of workshops across the US and around the world including Canada, England, Scotland, Finland, Italy, Spain, France and Australia. He has taught at the Paddy Crean International Art of the Sword Workshop, the International Swordfighting and Martial Arts Convention (ISMAC), Rapier Camp and the Western Washington WMA Workshop just to name a few.

Jared is the editor and one of the translators of “Italian Rapier Combat”, the first complete, professional translation of Capo Ferro. He is also the editor and wrote the introduction for “The School of Fencing” by Domenico Angelo and annotated by Maestro Jeannette Acosta-Martínez. Most recently “The Gentleman’s Guide to Duelling” was released in February 2014 and a reprint of Donald McBane’s The Expert Swordsman’s Companion was released in January 2017. As a Fight Coordinator, Jared has worked with stars such as Peter Sarsgaard, Steve Guttenberg, Cameron Douglas and has trained performers who are working on hit shows. He is a member of Actor’s Equity and SAG/AFTRA. As a Stunt Performer he has worked on films like IF (with Ryan Reynolds) and Confess Fletch (with Jon Hamm) shows like Law & Order: Organized Crime, The Gilded Age, Bull, The Equalizer, Dickinson, Lisey’s Story, Prodigal Son, Blue Bloods, City on a Hill, and Gotham.

He is the past president of Combat Con in Las Vegas, past president of Art of Combat, and served for six years on the board of the International Order of the Sword & Pen.

Friday

-6pm Meet & Greet
-7pm Lecture: The Code Duello
This presentation will explore the origins, growth and ultimate decline of the Duel in Europe. We will focus on Vincentio Saviolo’s 16th century dueling code which Jared Kirby presents in A Gentleman’s Guide to Duelling. Once the historical protocols of a duel are understood, the lecture will examine historical accounts of duels to discuss how many actually followed the correct procedures: -If you duel with billiard balls, is that OK? -Can a dog actually challenge a man to a duel? -Did duels happen in the 20th Century?

Saturday

-10am Classes & Training
-12:30pm Arranging Mock Duels
You will have a specific dueling scenario and adversary. This time will be spent making arrangements for Sunday mock duels. You will each need to find a 2nd (and may need to be a 2nd for others), the 2nds will write Cartels and make all the arrangements. Each Mock Duel will have a scheduled time for Sunday at Dusk

-5pm Preparation for the Duel
This will be open time to prepare as a duelist would. You should plan to write letters to loved ones, train with your 2nd, go to church, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to make my own hotel reservations?

Nope, If you choose the “I want it all” package, the cost of your room is included. We’ll handle it from there! If you choose the “I’m here to train” package, you will be responsible for your own accommodations. 

I’m coming with a friend, can we share a room?
 

Of course! If you plan on sharing a room, only one of you needs the “I want it all” package. Your roommate can take the “plus one package” for discounted workshop registration. Leave us a note at checkout if you plan on sharing a room.

 Where are the accommodations located?
 

We’ll be staying at the International House Hotel, located a short walk from the Historic French Quarter and Bourbon Street.
