Explore the origins and growth of the Personal Duel and train in the manner of those who needed to settle a point of honor. The CombatCon Dueling Experience will provide instruction in the historical protocols of a duel found in Saviolo’s 16th century dueling code, and martial arts classes will prepare participants to defend themselves and their honor in personal combat. The Experience will culminate in mock duels, inspired by all the drama, danger, and romance of their historical counterparts.
The Dueling Experience is open to all skill levels of participants.
Equipment Requirements: Fencing mask, fencing jacket and gloves for both hands. Chest protection and groin protection is recommended.
Life on the early American frontier was dangerous and brutal. Harsh climates, treacherous terrain, and always someone else waiting to poach your game. Surviving in this environment required exceptional knowledge and skill in hunting and close quarter combat. A longhunter would likely face a variety of weapons in their time on the hunt, depending on where they chose to seek their quarry. Various cultures such as British, German, French, Spanish, and Native American, all had numerous weapons which the longhunter would encounter if they were not careful.
The Frontier Martial Arts Experience will explore a variety of these types of weapons employing the McLemore system of combat. Students will learn how to fight with these weapons, as well as defend against them. The purpose of this Experience is to give the students a solid basis in combat with several weapons found on the frontier, and how to use each type against another. The Experience will culminate in a tournament-style scenario where the students get to choose which weapons they will have on them to defend themselves against any number of assailants “on the prairie.”
Required Equipment: Full protective gear is required to take this course. Weapons will consist of, but are not limited to: sabre, hanger, longknife, tomahawk, bayonet (affixed to a rifle), gunstock club.
The foundation of all martial arts is the concept of self-preservation in the face of violent hostility. While we hope that we never need to defend ourselves from harm, having the ability and mentality to do so can literally save lives. The CombatCon Personal Defense Experience will take participants from conceptual to practical, exploring empty hand, knife, “found” weapons, and even firearm material. Students will learn about active defense, the OODA loop, readiness conditions, the right of self-perservation, and a great deal of pratical, hands-on material with and without hand-held tools. The Experience will culminate in an activity designed to allow students to put their newly developed skills to the test.
Required Equipment: No special equipment is required for this Experience.
To dance is to fight and to fight is to dance. Throughout history where swordfighting has been an active pursuit, dance has been right there with it. It was expected to excel in both martial and social settings with dance being a gateway for both. Throughout this weekend-long movement track, participants will learn dances that span centuries from slower stately exhibitions to more active rounds where heels never touch the floor. These classes are meant to ready you for life at court and all you might face there. Meeting your sovereign, asking someone to dance, fighting with style, or catching the right eyes with your fancy footwork. At the end of your weekend, you will be tested! You will run a gamut of movement and social law to ensure that you are ready to hold your head high in even the most select corners of society.
Required Equipment: No special equipment is required for this Experience.
