HEMA Tournament Judging

Want to be a CombatCon Tournament Judge?

We are always looking to try new things and find more ways to expand our HEMA Tournaments. We are grateful for all the support of our participants in years past. We also appreciate the vast amount of feedback each year which help us grow in new directions for the next year! To that end:

We would like to introduce to you the CombatCon Tournament Staff Coalition. CombatCon is reaching out to HEMA clubs and schools to secure a broad range of qualified judges for all the tournament judging slots. We need experienced, qualified judges, but we are also concurrently working on training the next generation of judging staff. We have:

  • 115 Slots to be filled! This allows for 4 active & 1 Relief judge per pool

Each approved slot grants that person:
  • $10 credit toward tournament fees
  • Free Weapons Check privileges (if judging 2 or more tournaments)
  • 1 CombatCon signature swag item (if judging 3 or more tournaments)

*** Each applicant must purchase a pass to CombatCon ****

Judging Slots:

A judging slot is for one particular tournament. You will be a judge for one of the longsword, cutting, S&B, and/or Singlestick tournament.

When signing up for a slot you are confirming you are available for that entire tournament (pool, elims and finals). This includes if your tournament runs long or starts late.

You will also need to be at the Wednesday night Officials meeting (exceptions can be made, but priority will go to those who can attend). This will be where the tournament directors go over the rules answer all questions and to roll tatami. This is an important part of having consistent judging in the tournaments!

We will provide pizza in a hotel room Wednesday night after the meeting.

Selection process:
Volunteering does not automatically mean you will be chosen. Judges will be picked by the Tournament Director based on the following priorities:
-experience judging HEMA tournaments
-not participating in that tournament (ie we are endeavoring to not have Singlestick Tournament participants judge the Singlestick tournament).

You too can make a serious face like this.
