Over the last few decades we have benefited from the selfless efforts of those martial scholars willing to take the time to locate obscure texts, interpret the writings, and otherwise plumb the depths of ancient and hard to decipher treatises. However, there are also valuable nuggets of martial wisdom to be found in contemporary and relatively-available literature; it just depends on where—and more importantly—how you look. Modern fiction like You Only Live Twice, Shibumi, The Eiger Sanction, Breakheart Pass, and similar works by knowledgeable authors contain hidden information intended for the more astute reader. The process for discovering this is not always intuitive, but it is simple and learn-able. There will be copious examples of modern fiction, together with the subtle teachings that have been extracted from them.
