This class will focus on the prime directive in most Medieval hand to hand combat treatises – to strike the opponent. Because our modern natural bias toward sport wrestling makes us think of these combat systems as “wrestling”, we find locks, breaks and throws difficult or impossible to execute. When the prime directives of striking and arm-locking are followed strictly, we find that the treatises come to life with valid and violent actions. Training these actions properly presents new training issues, which will also be addressed so that the student will leave the class with the ability to practice appropriately.
