Intercepting, Slipping and Crossing: Bolognese Sword and Dagger

This class will cover the use of the first secondary weapon described by Giovanni dall’Agocchie, the dagger. Specifically, we will be looking at the essential actions that the dagger plays, namely intercepting, slipping and crossing, all of which are in addition to everything done with the sword alone. Students will learn to apply these concepts from all the guards against every angle of attack, as well as how to deal with these as the agent. (In a team-taught class, I would stress the differences and similarities with another style or tradition, as Dall’Agocchie largely sees the dagger as a support, not necessarily a second weapon).

Required Equipment: Sidesword trainer, parrying dagger, preferably with a heavy blade, fencing mask and gloves.
