Albert Toberer

Albert Toberer runs Blackfriar’s School of Fence in San Luis Obispo, California.

He entered the world of swashbuckling in the mid-90s, performing in battle pageants at small Renaissance faires throughout California with St. Kennoch’s guild.  As a student of the original Blackfriar’s, Albert developed his knowledge of stage combat with various weapons. Growing into the position of assistant instructor he performed fighting exhibitions for schools and choreographed fights for college productions. He re-established the Blackfriar’s school in 2010 with a martial focus.

Albert strives to distill all he can from fight manuals and seeks out knowledge by travelling and learning from contemporary instructors.  His goal is to make HEMA accessible to anyone who comes through the door wanting to learn.

In addition to HEMA training, Albert also has trained in Shotokan karate (1st degree black belt) and also holds a level 2 USA Archery instructor certificate and has helped develop several youth programs in the area.
