Tournament Gear Guide

 

This guide is intended to help participants ensure that their equipment is appropriate for the CombatCon HEMA tournaments. The first section contains the equipment requirements. The second section contains examples of equipment typically worn by HEMA practitioners. This is intended for information sake at the request of several competitors new to HEMA competition. The appearance or absence of an item from these summary lists is not to be taken as an endorsement by the CombatCon organization.

 

General Rules

CombatCon Tournaments are considered to simulate unarmored, and in the interests of promoting a professional HEMA image and to encourage fighters to respect the weapon simulators, heavy armor (breast plates, etc) or Fantasy-styled armors are not permitted.

No exposed skin is permitted for any tournaments.

All armor will be inspected by the tournament staff prior to competition. If any armor is deemed to be inappropriate, the participant will be required to remove it and replace it with a piece of appropriate equipment.

Longsword Tournaments

 

Protective Equipment

Fantasy type armor is prohibited, this includes head protection designed to be a modified medieval or renaissance helmet.

 

  • Appropriate Head protection: Masks with back of the head protection.
  • Trachea protection, that protects the throat from a direct thrust.
  • Heavy padded HEMA jackets or Padded Gambeson
  • Hard elbow protection, that covers the 3 points of the elbow.
  • Hard Knee protection that covers the knee.
  • Hard shelled hand protection
  • Groin protection for male fighters.
  • Breast protection for female fighters.
  • Shin and forearm protection are not essential but recommended.
  • No exposed skin will be allowed.

 

Longswords

All Longswords must meet the following criteria:

  • Federed Blades
  • Between 3-4 lbs
  • Blade length of less than 40”
  • Be in state of good repair (no sharp nicks/chips)
  • Be acceptably flexible to the discretion of tournament staff (standard feder level of flexibility)

 

The list below serves as a guideline for what is considered an acceptable feder for this year’s CombatCon tournament.

  • Albion Meyer
  • Regenyei – Various models
  • Comfort Fencing: Dobringer
  • SGT: All current production feder models that are within acceptable ranges.
  • Black Horse Blades: Arbietspferd
  • Ensifer: Long and standard feder.
  • Chelbowski: Standard feder
  • Danelli: Feder
Non-Approved Blades

  • Hanwei Feder
  • Blunt Longswords

Rapier Tournament

All of these tournaments are considered to simulate ‘blossfechten’, and in the interests of promoting a professional HEMA image and to encourage fighters to respect the weapon simulators, heavy armor (breast plates, etc) or Fantasy-styled armors are not permitted.

 

  • Appropriate Head protection: Masks with back of the head protection.
  • Trachea protection, that protects the throat from a direct thrust.
  • Heavy padded HEMA jackets, Padded Gambeson, or fencing Jacket.
  • Groin protection for male fighters.
  • Breast protection for female fighters.
  • Hard elbow protection, that covers the 3 points of the elbow.
  • Hard Knee protection that covers the knee.
  • Shin and forearm protection are not essential but highly recommended.
  • No exposed skin will be permitted.

 

Rapiers

All rapiers must be between 36 and 42″ in total blade length and must NOT be lighter than 2 lbs. Blades may be neither extremely floppy, or overly stiff (ie little to no flex).

  • Castille Armory:  standard rapier blade (not basic)
  • Deltin
  • Angus Trim
  • Hanwei
  • Darkwood Armory
  • Danelli
Non-Approved Blades:

  • ANY foil type blades

Singlestick Tournament
